How To Convert an Interactive Brokers Statement to Excel
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) statements are the most data-rich of any retail broker, positions, trades, dividends, options, futures, and multi-currency detail in one PDF. This guide shows how to convert an IBKR statement to Excel with each section on its own sheet.
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) issues some of the most information-dense brokerage statements in the industry. A standard monthly Activity Statement can include: open positions (equities, options, futures, bonds, forex), trades, dividends and withholding tax, margin interest, stock borrowing costs, commissions, realized P&L, unrealized P&L, and account balance changes, all in a single PDF that can run 50+ pages for active traders.
Extracting this data manually is not practical. This guide walks through converting an IBKR statement to Excel with DocuClipper's brokerage statement converter.
While you are here
Extract holdings and activity from any broker PDF
Upload a brokerage statement from Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, Merrill, E*TRADE, or Robinhood and DocuClipper returns structured tables (positions, buys/sells, dividends) ready to export.
How DocuClipper maps IBKR sections to Excel sheets
| IBKR statement section | Excel sheet | Key columns |
|---|---|---|
| Open Positions | Holdings | symbol, description, quantity, price, cost_basis, market_value, unrealized_pnl, asset_class, currency |

| Dividends & Distributions | Income | date, symbol, description, income_type (ordinary_div/qualified_div/return_of_capital), gross_amount, currency |
| Withholding Tax | Tax | date, symbol, description, tax_type, tax_amount, currency |

What's different about IBKR statement layouts
Multi-currency accounts. IBKR supports trading in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, and many other currencies in the same account. Positions and trades each carry a currency column in the DocuClipper output. The Summary sheet includes a currency-by-currency cash balance breakdown.
Complex instrument types. IBKR statements include equities, equity options (standard + FLEX), futures, futures options, bonds, ETFs, forex positions, and CFDs (for non-US accounts). DocuClipper extracts all types with an asset_class label on each row.
Realized P&L section. IBKR includes a detailed Realized P&L summary by security. DocuClipper carries realized P&L through to the Trades sheet as a realized_pnl column rather than a separate sheet.
IBKR Flex Query alternative. IBKR Pro users can also pull data via the Flex Query system (custom XML/CSV reports). DocuClipper is the PDF extraction path, useful when you need to process historical statements or statements for a client who doesn't want to set up Flex Queries.
Put it into practice
Manually copying brokerage data creates reconciliation errors
Cost basis, market value, realized gains: these numbers compound errors when retyped. DocuClipper extracts them directly from the statement so holdings and activity tie out the first time.
How to download an IBKR PDF statement
- Log in to Client Portal (clientportal.ibkr.com) or Trader Workstation (TWS)
- Go to Reports → Tax Documents & Statements → Statements
- Select Monthly Activity Statement, choose the month, set format to PDF, and click Run
- Download the PDF, open DocuClipper, drop it in, and click Extract
Annual tax statements (IBKR's 1099 or international equivalents) are a separate document type, use DocuClipper's 1099 extraction for those.
FAQs about Interactive Brokers statement conversion
Does DocuClipper handle IBKR's multi-currency positions?
Yes. Each position row and trade row carries a currency column. The Summary sheet includes cash balances in each currency. For reporting purposes, DocuClipper preserves the original currency values rather than converting them, so you can apply your own exchange rates in Excel.
Can I convert IBKR options and futures to Excel?
Yes. Options and futures appear in Holdings with asset_class=option or asset_class=future. Options trades and futures trades appear in Activity with strike, expiration, and contract multiplier where available on the statement.
Does DocuClipper work with IBKR Lite as well as IBKR Pro?
Yes. IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro accounts produce Activity Statements in the same format. Both are supported without any configuration change.
What about IBKR's Flex Query format?
DocuClipper processes the standard PDF Activity Statement. IBKR's Flex Query system exports XML or CSV. If you already have those exports, you don't need DocuClipper for conversion. DocuClipper is the right tool when you have PDF statements (e.g., client accounts, historical records, or accounts where Flex Query access isn't enabled).
Can I process multiple months of IBKR statements at once?
Yes. Drop multiple PDFs into DocuClipper and get a single consolidated Excel workbook with all months combined, one row per position or per trade.
